In fact the speed limit on a Defender seems to be the low gearing more than anything else: At anything above 80mph you're starting to fall off the back of the engine's power curve. If the gearing was slightly higher (like, say, with a Disco transfer box) it would make more effective use of the power that it's got. Jack.

My fathers speedo and odometer/ mile counter thingy have stopped working on his M-reg 300 tdi Discovery. I have searched ebay, but does anyone know the part numbers for the odometer cable and the speedo cable?
There are ways to fix the problem, but unfortunately it is is a known problem which tends to kill most early 19J turbo diesel engines. Later turbo diesel engines (before the 200 and 300 tdi) were better, because Land Rover redesigned the block somewhat to cope with the excess heating problems.

6. Remove the timing cover. 7. Replace the Idler, tensioner (Allen socket for both) and crankshaft pulley – you will need a puller for that one (see the image below, puller and Allen bolts) . 8. Place each part in its place, do not tighten them yet. Install the new belt.

Exhaust System. The kit is supplied with a complete D90 or D110 exhaust system. A specially designed front down pipe takes the exhaust to a standard Land Rover 300tdi system. This 60mm diameter set-up is essential to the efficiency of the 300tdi engine to avoid excess turbo back-pressure. All support brackets and rubber mountings are supplied. The 300Tdi was replaced in 1998 by the 5-cylinder Td5, bringing to an end the line of Land Rover 4-cylinder engines that can be traced back to 1957. The Td5 engine was loosely based on the Rover Group's L-series diesel engine. The 300Tdi remained in production in Brazil, and was offered as an option on rest of world (non-UK/Europe) models.
