With the trunk open, close the latch, as if the trunk is closed. A screwdriver blade or similar will do this. Then attach your meter to the signal connection, and 'open' the latch. See if the voltage changes. If it does not change, the switch on the latch is not working.

Spend a good 15 minutes cleaning inside the wiring terminals with wet n dry paper. If your'e tempted to use anything metallic, then remove the battery fist. Swap the belt over. Stick the senor back in (clean up the metal bracket first to make the insertion much easier). Do the bolt up on the underside of the sensor that attaches the plastic of the sensor to the metal engine block. Tension your new belt.

Re: Alternator swap, how? First thing you need is a code reader and then go from there. Alternators hardly ever fail on Stilos and the power steering failure is nearly always linked to supposed alternator failure (it's still safe to assume insufficient power is being supplied to power steering though - which at least is a clue).
